Jokowi’s Speech at UNGA: Key points

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo finally made his first remarks at the United Nations General Assembly today. This is his first appearance at the international forum during the time of his presidency. In his first term, he delegated the task to his Vice President, Jusuf Kalla.

Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi twitted about this, saying that President Joko Widodo would join other heads of state at the UNGA on September 23rd, at 07.00 WIB (West Indonesia time). The speech has previously been recorded and would be broadcasted at the United Nations General Assembly. What are the key points Joko Widodo emphasized at this year’s UNGA?

President Widodo reminded the United Nations that the New York-headquartered intergovernmental organization was founded to attain world peace and prevent a war as horrendous as the Second World War from ever happening. General welfare and a more peaceful world are expected outcomes of the founding of the UN.

However, President Widodo also highlighted conflicts that are happening in the world. He opined that world peace had not been fully actualized. Our dreamed world is not yet here, according to the 59-year-old.

Jokowi, as he is popularly called, brought up the situation of hunger and poverty that still engulfed many in this world. National sovereignties, alignment with the international laws and territorial integrity are also among the issues highlighted by the president.

Specifically, the former Mayor of Surakarta addressed the current state of Covid-19. He encouraged countries to unite and fight against this pandemic with spirit of unity. He regretted that in many parts of the world, rivalries and divisions were still at play.
