Jokowi invites Emperor of Japan to invest in Natuna

In near future, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), is expecting the visit from the Emperor of Japan, Emperor Naruhito, to Indonesia to discuss the measures to contain stability of international politics. However, the exact date remains unknown.

According to an official statement on Sunday, the Presidential Spokesman, Fadjroel Rachman, confirmed the news. He stated that the invitation had been delivered to the symbol of Japan when Indonesia received Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thoshimitsu Motegi, at the State Palace on Friday last week.

The invitation for a state visit was a part of Jokowi’s effort to build an international corporation for sound political stability.

For Fadjroel, the stability of international politics needs to be preserved because Japan and Indonesia possess a mutual view of harmony and peace. Japan itself had begun the new era, Reiwa Era, when Emperor Emeritus Akihito abdicated from the Chrysanthemum Throne, succeeded by his son, Emperor Naruhito. “Reiwa” means “Beautiful Harmony”.

Therefore, when Jokowi meets Naruhito, Fadjroel said that it means the encounter of peace.

On the other side, he added the President of Indonesia also wants to discuss other issues such as agreements to strengthen the trust between Indonesia and Japan in strategic fields and global diplomatic network so that both countries may prevail from the global crisis.

Meeting Motegi, Jokowi invited the Land of the Rising Sun to continue its investment in Indonesia, especially in Natuna Regency, Riau Islands. Previously, Indonesia and Japan already invested in the first phase of integrated fisheries and maritime center. Jokowi wanted the project to continue to its second phase.

All attention went to Natuna since the Chinese boats entered the territory within Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) according to the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Hence, Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, already summoned Chinese Envoy in Indonesia to give a letter of protest to Beijing.
