Jokowi aims to reform educational curriculum facing digital competition

President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), asked all education practitioners, both teachers and lecturers, to abandon archaic methods. In turn, Jokowi asked them to create a new teaching and learning method for the students.

The President was attending the inauguration of Prof. Kyai Asep Syaifuddin Chalim as Professor of Sociology at Sunan Ampel State Islamic University Surabaya on Saturday.

Jokowi hailed Prof. Kyai Asep for improving Indonesian human resources through his books and education movement. His education model through the implementation of moderate religious concept salvages students from going misled by radicalism.

Speaking in front of the Nahdlatul Ulama Teachers Association (Pergunu), Jokowi said that the current curriculum needs to be reformed. Not only to keep up with the time but also to create a new skill, called “hybrid skill”. The former Governor of Jakarta and Mayor of Solo also said that soft skill alone is insufficient. Therefore, new materials need to be made.

Jokowi pointed out that as the world has entered the Industrial Revolution 4.0 which relies heavily on digital and internet development, Indonesian education needs to provide necessary means to catch up. Moreover, Indonesian students need technical and social skills in order to innovate.

He keeps on reminding that the world is rapidly changing in super speed. Old-fashioned ways are now archaic and abandoned. Nowadays, new and hybrid skills are in hot pursuits.
