Joko Widodo: ASEAN youths have to think creatively in facing global challenges

On Saturday, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo during the 34th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, spoke up about how youths can encounter challenges in the midst of global uncertainties through working hard, innovations and thinking outside the box.

Currently, the world is full of ambiguity causing many challenges appearing. To keep existing in this global era, people especially youngsters can’ t lose to the challenges. Young people have to think creatively in order to confidently face them, as Indonesia Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi quoted.

Indonesia could be proud of its creative industries since the growth of Indonesia’s digital economy is the highest in Southeast Asia. According to Deputy of Infrastructure of the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) Hari Santosa Sungkari, the growth reached 90 percent during 2015 – 2017.

Creative industry players, as well as small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs), have an important role within e-commerce transactions in Indonesia. It was reported the total amount of Indonesia’s e-commerce transaction in 2017 touched US$8 million, of which US$5 million were coming from local online market places such as Bukalapak, Tokopedia, and others.

According to the foreign minister, the Indonesia leader also emphasized the region’s role for being the agents of peace and tolerance during the summit.

Another crucial issue discussed was marine debris, in which the ASEAN leaders have committed to enhancing actions at the national level and cooperation between the ASEAN’s members to prevent and reduce the issue.

ASEAN Summit is a biannual assembly held by the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to discuss the development of economic, political, security, and socio-cultural aspects within the region.
