Job offer rate for university students expected to graduate next spring reaches record high, but varies by industry

The job-hunting activities of university students graduating next spring began on the first of this month, and the percentage of students who have received job offers as of the first of the month was 17.6%, the highest ever, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. However, due to the effects of the new coronavirus, the actual situation is that there is a large variation among industries.

The survey was conducted by Recruit Career, a major human resource service company, and targeted over 4,600 university students who will graduate next spring.

Based on the schedule set by the government, job fairs for university students started on the 1st of this month. 17.6% of the students answered that they had already received job offers as of the 1st.

This is 1.8 percentage points higher than last year and the highest since the survey began in 2012.

Looking at the companies from which students received job offers by industry

IT-related and other information and communication industries accounted for 27.5% of all job offers.

Retailers such as supermarkets and home centers accounted for 15.4% of the total.

IT companies, which have increased their workloads in response to the digitalization of the Internet, and supermarkets and home centers, which have seen an increase in the number of customers visiting their stores, are accelerating their hiring activities.

On the other hand, the severe impact of the new coronavirus

On the other hand, job offers from the restaurant and lodging industries, which are severely affected by the new coronavirus, accounted for 2.5% of the total, while those from the transportation industry accounted for 5.5%.

The surveyed companies analyzed that the current job offer rate does not reflect the overall trend because of the wide variation among industries.
