Japanese groups to send Turkey quake survivors sleeping bags
Japanese non-profit organizations are preparing to send sleeping bags to Turkey to help survivors of the massive earthquake that struck the southern part of the country.
One of the organizations is Peak Aid, which is headed by alpinist Noguchi Ken. The aid group is based in Yamanashi Prefecture, and it has been helping people affected by disasters.
The organizers say they received nearly 1,500 sleeping bags from across Japan after they called for donations.
On Thursday, volunteers packed the sleeping bags into boxes and put them on trucks.
The group says it was wondering how to transport them to Turkey, but the Turkish embassy offered to take them. The sleeping bags will be shipped to the affected area. Quake survivors there are suffering, due to the cold weather.
Noguchi said he hopes the bags will be delivered as soon as possible to prevent survivors from dying of fatigue. He said it can be exhausting to spend sleepless nights in the cold.
