Japanese design exhibit starts in Sao Paulo, Brazil
An exhibition has opened in Brazil to introduce Japanese design in traditional crafts and architecture.
The exhibition was organized by Japan House Sao Paulo, a Japanese government-backed public relations facility.
The event features the research of world-renowned Japanese architects and designers on "design treasures" hidden in Japanese lifestyles and culture.
One section displays earthenware excavated from the Goshono ruins of the Jomon period in Iwate Prefecture, northern Japan. It shows that elaborate design existed in inhabited spaces 10,000 years ago.
Another section displays ship propellers manufactured in Okayama Prefecture, western Japan. It reveals how craftsmen's pursuits of the most efficient shapes resulted in beautiful designs void of unnecessary elements.
Visitors can also view a traditional garment that is said to have been worn at a festival on Amami-Oshima Island in southwestern Japan.
Natasha Geenen of Japan House Sao Paulo says Brazilians can learn a lot from the Japanese perception that design is everywhere and beauty abounds in everyday life.
