Japanese anime reaps more profit from overseas

Number the things Japan is famous for. One of which must be “Anime”. Yes, the Japanese animation is in the middle of its golden age both in its homeland and overseas. Moreover, with the introduction of the internet which makes it even easier to watch anime anywhere and anytime, anime is enjoying its biggest explosion in the market.

Annually, the Association of Japanese Animators (AJA) conducted an earning study of roughly 150 significant animation industries. Releasing the 2019 report, the AJA pointed out that the anime industry grew significantly for the sixth consecutive years!

It is the sixth year that the Japanese anime reached an all-time high, reaping ¥2.18 billion industry-wide earnings.

The Internet also played a big role in it. While the sales of physical video dropped, the revenue of video streaming rose to ¥59.5 billion. Overseas, the revenue reached more than ¥1 billion, mainly from video games and theatrical screenings.

The overseas figure stated that about 46 percent of the big revenue came from outer Japan. It means that the overseas market now has become as important as the Japanese market itself.

On the other hand, even though the figure of the revenue is lucrative, it does not mean that the Japanese anime industry is “healthy”. While the revenue’s figure is astronomical, the Japanese animation companies are still struggling to keep the lights on.

The most recent case befell Tear Studio. The Tokyo-based animation company filed its bankruptcy due to a huge amount of debt in early December, leaving more than 50 of its workers unpaid.

While the world demands encores to the Japanese animation, the companies are suffering from a razor-thin profit margin as they produce more and more content.
