Japan Will Reopen Borders For Tourist Destinations From June

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Japan has still closed arrivals from abroad for tourist purposes. But it looks like it won't last long, as some good news recently came from the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida.

According to Japanese Station, Japan's Prime Minister announced that border restrictions will begin to be eased in the summer of this year. According to Kyodo News, Kishida made the announcement at a press conference in London on Thursday 5 May.

Details have not been disclosed, but Kishida said the plan was to consult with health experts and review Covid-19 border measures "in stages". Bloomberg reported that, at a press conference earlier in the day, Kishida said his goal was to make Japan as accessible as the rest of the G7 countries from June onwards.

According to the Nikkei, the Japanese government is considering lifting the tourist visa ban immediately. Officials want to see what impact the Golden Week holiday will have on the number of coronavirus cases before making a decision in two weeks' time. It is possible that the border will be opened to tour groups first before opening to public tourism at the end of the year.

However, The Japan Times reports that the country may open small tour groups as early as this month. The details are still unclear, but hopefully the new rules will welcome us back to Japan soon.
