Japan weather officials warn of possible volcanic eruptions at Beyonesu Rocks
Japan's Meteorological Agency is warning of possible eruptions for the Beyonesu Rocks or Bayonnaise Rocks, a small volcano in the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of kilometers off the coast of Tokyo.
The agency says the volcano could erupt under the sea and issued a volcanic warning. It is urging vessels navigating the waters nearby to exercise caution.
The agency says an aerial survey by the Japan Coast Guard on Thursday afternoon found a change in color in the surface of the sea around the volcano.
The rocks, which are located 65 kilometers south-southeast of Aogashima Island in the Izu Island chain, repeatedly erupted.
An eruption back in 1952 killed all 31 people on board a coast guard survey ship.
It was the first time since November 2017 that a change in color in the sea surface around the rocks was confirmed.
