Japan to lift the state of emergency in 39 prefectures

On Thursday, the Japanese government decided to lift the state of emergency for 39 prefectures of 47 prefectures. While the state of emergency will end at the end of May, these 39 prefectures showed that the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) does not spread as widely as the other 8 prefectures.

Urban regions such as Tokyo and Osaka will have to wait to make sure that the number of cases has fallen and the burden on hospital alleviates. It all depends on the real-time data on the spread of the COVID-19 and the situation faced by the hospitals.

Japan’s Economic Revitalization Minister, Yasutoshi Nishimura, stated that 39 prefectures showed that the number of COVID-19 cases was falling and they have enough capacity to provide medical care. Therefore, they are eligible for the lift.

However, some prefectures will be required to report such as Ehime, Ibaraki, Ishikawa, Gifu, Aichi, and Fukuoka. These prefectures need special caution due to a large number of COVID-19 cases.

The eight urban prefectures, starting from Hokkaido, Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hyogo, will remain under the state of emergency until the end of May. The decision is final and the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, already delivered the status at 6 p.m. JST.
