Japan to host special summit with ASEAN in December
Japan has decided to host a special summit with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in December.
The government approved the plan at a Cabinet meeting on Friday.
The event scheduled for December 16 through 18 in Tokyo will close the year marking the 50th anniversary of friendship and cooperation between Japan and ASEAN.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu said Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is expected to discuss with the leaders of ASEAN member countries many topics, including regional affairs, the economy and development projects, at the summit.
Matsuno expressed hope that a new vision of mutual cooperation and concrete cooperative measures in a wide range of fields will be announced at the meeting.
Kishida will visit Indonesia to attend an ASEAN summit next week. He is likely to sound out members of the group about possible cooperation toward the December summit.
