Japan to Elect Upper House Members on 21 July

TOKYO - Stated on Wednesday (26/6), the Japanese government is going to hold an election on the upcoming 21 July for the upper house members; hence, the campaign period was officially started. While the election came so sudden, there were also some expectations that the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, would also hold a shotgun lower house election to further strengthen his reign. However, as expected of Shinzo Abe, he does not consider such intrigue.

On Monday (24/6), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito, ruling parties in Shinzo Abe’s cabinet, stated that they hoped to win the most seat in the upcoming upper house election even though with decreased members from those parties.

As matter of fact, a joint no-confidence motion filed against Shinzo Abe’s cabinet on 24 June by The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Democratic Party for the People, the Japanese Communist Party, the Reviewing Group on Social Security Policy and the Social Democratic Party was directly denied on 25 June. Therefore, their way to the upper house’s seats is almost sealed.

For Abe himself, he hopes that the success of the upcoming G-20 Summit in Osaka will make his ruling blocs stronger. On the contrary, there was an outrageous issue that the Japanese government would remove the elderly pension, which directly affected Abe’s support rate.
