Japan's government to prepare fund to support fishers in treated water release
The Japanese government plans to set up a fund of 80 billion yen, or about 550 million dollars, to support fishers in light of the upcoming release of treated and diluted water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
The plant's operator is expected to start releasing the water into the ocean as early as Thursday.
The discharge process is expected to take several decades.
The government will take responsibility for ensuring safety and dispelling reputational damage to ease concerns and promote understanding of fishers and other local people.
It also plans to prepare a service that will keep people informed about the progress of the measures being taken in relation to the discharge.
