Japan's department stores promoting gender-neutral apparel

Some Japanese department stores are taking steps to promote diversity in their apparel departments.

Matsuya Ginza, located in Tokyo's luxury Ginza district, introduced earlier this month an apparel section for gender-neutral merchandise. The section also offers both men's and women's clothing, allowing couples and families to shop for their own clothes together.

Japanese department stores have traditionally sold men's clothing on different floors from women's clothing.

Matsuya Ginza employee Kimura Mari said her department store hopes to further expand the section as consumption trends and values change.

Another department store, Daimaru Matsuzakaya, is now offering clothing originally targeting women, such as dresses, to male customers in its online monthly subscription clothing rental service. It now offers about 4,300 pieces of gender-neutral clothing.
