Japan reaches over 5,000 COVID-19 cases

Per Thursday, a Japanese public broadcaster, NHK, revealed that the total positive cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) reached 5,002, rising by 29 cases. From the number, the death toll rose by 1 death to 105.

The number showed that the state of emergency on Tokyo and six other areas declared by the Prime Minister of Japan does not work as efficiently as expected.

As a state of emergency was declared, the regional governments could restrict people from going out and force businesses to close for a while.

The number came as the Japanese central bank warned that the COVID-19 outbreak had caused unprecedented economic volatility as the regional economies are facing their worst since the global financial crisis a decade ago.

The Japanese authorities don’t want to impose a mandatory lockdown as it could be a huge blow to the economy struggling to survive with the COVID-19 outbreak. In turn, they hope that the Japanese people would respect the authority and remind each other to stay home during the health crisis.

Hideaki Omura, the Governor of Aichi Prefecture, stated that he would declare a state of emergency today. While Aichi, where Nagoya and Toyota Motor Corp are situated, was not included in the emergency prefectures’ list, Omura insists.
