Japan Prime Minister Kishida wins 2023 Global Goalkeeper Award
Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has won this year's Global Goalkeeper Award for his contribution to pursuing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The honor was established by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to promote the SDGs, which include ending poverty, spreading quality education and protecting ecosystems.
At a ceremony in New York on Wednesday, Kishida was presented with a trophy by Bill Gates, a co-founder of IT giant Microsoft.
The foundation noted that the Japanese prime minister steered discussions on the SDGs at this year's Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima.
In his acceptance speech, Kishida pointed
out that this year marks the midpoint in efforts to reach the goals by 2030,
but said fulfilling them is at risk. He added that it is necessary more than
ever to accelerate efforts for the SDGs.
