Japan 'may' give medical assistance to Iran

On the sidelines of the 74th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, is set to meet with his counterpart, the President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani. Rouhani had been asking repeatedly for medical assistance from Japan.

Japan reportedly had been considering to give medical assistance to Tehran, and most probably, it will provide, judging the bilateral relations between the two countries. This medical assistance will cover professional training for medical practitioners in Iran.

Last year in New York, Abe agreed to provide medical and disaster prevention assistance, believing that humanitarian support did not breach the US sanctions list. However, the Japanese government is still on high alert whether Tehran would misuse the advanced medical technology that they required to alter it as materials for weaponry.

Japan, relied on by the US, takes advantage of its close relations with both Iran and the US to mediate peace in the Middle East region between the two warring countries. Since the withdrawal of the US in the 2015 JCPOA deal and putting sanctions on Iran instead, the US and Iran have been in a bad term.

Recently, the US accused Iran of being involved in the drone attack to Saudi’s Aramco oil facility that caused the shutting down of global oil reserves from 7% to 5%. Iran called the allegation as “unacceptable” and “baseless”.
