Japan government corrects missile alert
Japan's government used its J-alert nationwide emergency
warning system on Thursday morning to issue a warning that a North Korean
missile could fall in or around the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido.
Twenty minutes later, it issued a notice through its
emergency information network system, or Em-Net, that there was no longer a
possibility of that happening.
Government officials explained that the correction was made
because they learned, after they issued the J-alert, that there was no
possibility the missile would fall on Japanese territory.
They said they used the Em-Net because of restrictions on
the J-alert system.
The central government uses the Em-Net system to send
e-mails to local governments, media outlets and others in the event of a
contingency, as stipulated by Japanese law.
The system has now been installed in
all of Japan's 47 prefectures and their municipalities.
