Japan - Demonstration Test of an Office Using Face Recognition even While Wearing a Mask

As infections with the new coronavirus continue to spread, in order to protect the safety of workers, a verification test has begun to reduce contact with people at work by using face recognition at the entrances and exits of offices and shops.

By improving the accuracy of face recognition technology, it is possible to identify multiple people at the same time while wearing a mask and display the body temperature measured by an infrared camera. As the new coronavirus infection continues to spread, the company is trying to reduce the risk of infection for people who come to work, and is proceeding with verification of how to effectively reduce contact with people, and plans to sell it as a system in the future.

Tomohide Ota of NEC, who is in charge of the project, said, “We would like to contribute to a society without the threat and anxiety of the new coronavirus by providing high-quality products through demonstration experiments”.

On the 13th, NEC started demonstrations at the head office building in Tokyo, which distinguishes the behavior of employees by face recognition and video analysis technology and enhances the convenience of work. The aim is to transform offices by utilizing digital technology and promote new work styles associated with new coronavirus infections.

By utilizing various technologies, it is possible to see at a glance the data such as the office attendance rate of each department, the number of meetings, and file sharing usage rate, and it becomes easier to manage the work of employees who have difficulty working from home.
