Japan: 2020 Olympics will and must go on

Despite challenges and strident criticisms from opposition forces, Japan said that it remains firm to hold the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the sports event will go on amid the global novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Written in a statement, President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, said that it remains fully committed to the 2020 Summery Olympics in Tokyo. The statement came after IOC held an extraordinary teleconference with international sports federations. Noting that there are more than four months before the game, IOC said that they are not rushing to make any drastic decisions.

Furthermore, after a G-7 videoconference, the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, said that he had received full support from the G-7 leaders to hold the 2020 Summer Olympics completely “with spectators”.

IOC and the federations mutually agreed to advance their preparations for the Tokyo Games to begin on July 2024. Amid the pandemic (yes, the WHO declared the virus as a pandemic), IOC added that the athletes should keep themselves prepared for the Olympics, confident that the authorities all around the world will do their best in containing the COVID-19.

The statement came also during rife speculation among the Japanese and people around the world that the 2020 Tokyo Games will be either postponed or canceled. The number of cases and death tolls due to the COVID-19 are rising rapidly outside Japan, especially in the European Continent.

Bach said that until now 57 percent of the athletes are qualified for the 2020 Olympic Olympics. During the Executive Board meeting, the IOC also discussed how the qualifying events for the Games amid the global pandemic. Especially, since the world is halting travel restrictions and other safety measures.

After the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the COVID-19 as a global pandemic on 11 March, the President of the United States (U.S), Donald Trump, said that the Olympics should be postponed for a year. He said that moving the date is better than holding the games “empty”.

Kyodo held a poll on Monday, resulting in 69.9 percent of respondents wanted the Summer Olympics to go on as planned.
