Italian Crime Couple Arrested For Fraud Using George Clooney’s Name

An Interpol Red Notice had the couple’s name on their list, Francesco Galdelli, 58, and Vanja Goffi, 45, since 2013. They were accused of online fraud by posing as George Clooney, a well-known American actor, to promote fashion business. George Clooney had sued and testified againts them for using his name to commit fraud. Besides of their famous crime, they were also accused for doing other scams and frauds in Italy. That’s how they got the nickname, “Bonnie and Clyde”, a name of notorious US crime couple responsible for bank robbery in the Great Depression era.

Galdelli and Goffi had been on the run and fled from their home country to avoid arrest since 2012. They started to live in Thailand since 2014 and Galdelli had been arrested on the same year. However, the husband managed to escape after his first hearing. On Saturday, June 15 2019, the couple were finally arrested on the outskirts of the Thai city of Pattaya, on Saturday. They were caught in a joint operation of Thai and Italian authorities according to Thailand's Crime Suppression Division. News agency AFP said that Galdelli gave a confession about him and his wife pretended to be George Clooney and open a clothing business to trick people into sending money.

Before got arrested, they sustained their life on the run by continue doing multiple scams, including selling fake Rolex watches online. Sometimes they mocked their victims by sending packets of salt instead of the watches. Before extradition proceedings begin, they will be charged for overstaying their visas. Now they are being detained at the detention center of the Immigration Bureau in Pattaya.
