Israel Launches 5G Mobile Network Tender, Ready to Launch in 2020

Israel has just launched a tender for 5G mobile network deployment on Sunday (7/14) with the government’s incentives to improve the internet infrastructure in the country.

Despite being the so-called Start-up Nation, Israel has been suffering from slow internet speeds which are getting even more slowly compared to other countries in recent years. South Korea, Britain, Spain, and Switzerland that are also among the countries with the fastest internet speed in the world have rolled out the fifth generation network services earlier.

With at least 10 times faster speed than 4G, the Israeli communications ministry said that 5G is necessary to develop education, agriculture, and health sectors, as well as smart cities and self-driving cars—enabling the country to adhere with the global developments. The digital future of Israel is dependent on upgrading to 5G as soon as possible, added Director General of the ministry Netanel Cohen.

In the tender, the Israeli government will open an auction for frequencies ranging from 700-2100 MHz, also used in 4G, to 2600-3800 MHz that will solely be used for 5G services. For operators who deploy at least 25 5G antennas, the government will grant incentives up to US$141 million and also delay payment for the frequencies license until 2022. The bidding is announced to be open for both local and foreign players.

The ministry hopes that the attractive package of incentives will attract more telecom operators to bid in the tender, especially Israel's three main operators Cellcom, Partner Communications, and Pelephone.

Winners of the bidding will be chosen by December, aiming to start deploying the 5G services in 2020 until 2023.
