Instagram Adds New Tools to Flag False Information

The rise of false information in cyberspace has become a concern in recent years. As social media users, you may be aware that any platforms you use are prone to it—just name a few, Facebook. The company does not ban the practice of posting false information, but it is taking steps to limit inaccurate information through its owned photo-sharing site Instagram.

An independent report says that Instagram may have been the most effective platform for Russian actors to spread false information online. The country was associated with intervention conduct during the 2016 US election.

As the largely used social media platform, therefore, the parent company Facebook said on Thursday (8/5) that it is adding tools for Instagram users to report any posts they find false. At present, the company has 54 fact-checking partners in 42 languages. The using of image-detection on Instagram has already started on May to find content debunked. When the false information found, it will be removed from the places where users usually seek for content like on the Explore tab and hashtag.

However, the tool will only be rolled out in the United States for now.

The Facebook company spokeswoman, Stephanie Otway, said that the roll out of this tool is just an initial step of the company toward a comprehensive approach to tackling fake news.
