IndoXXI to close starting on 1 January 2020

On Tuesday, one of the most beloved Indonesian movie download and streaming service, IndoXXI, announced on its website that it will stop its service as early as 1 January 2020. By closing its service, IndoXXI wished the Indonesian creative industry best of luck.

Undoubtedly, the Indonesian moviegoers felt the loss. About 63 percent of Indonesian netizens used streaming or torrent services to download or watch movies, while about 35 percent used the IndoXXI site. The number made IndoXXI the most popular movie site in Indonesia.

On the other hand, the Indonesian creative industry was caught under fire by the existence of IndoXXI. What gives? Of the 63 percent of the streamers or downloaders, about 62 percent of them said that they had canceled subscriptions to legal video-on-demand services.

Therefore, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology vowed to eradicate the violation of intellectual property rights; one of the axed sites was IndoXXI.

Kemenkominfo’s Director general for applications and informatics, Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, said that to battle pirated movies and illegal streaming services, the Ministry also collaborates with Coalition Against Piracy (CAP) and Ministry of Law and Human Rights’ Directorate General of Intellectual Properties.

It was not easy, however. Semuel told his struggle to ax these illegal sites that when one was axed, the owners of the sites would come up with a new site with a new URL. CAP also found out that 29 percent of consumers using “TV Box” also used the chance to access pirated movies and illegal streaming services.

TV Box is an Illicit Streaming Devices (ILD) pre-installed with illegal apps. The device stores hundreds or thousands of pirated TV channels and video-on-demand content. The TV Box is well-received among the youngsters (18 – 24-year-olds), making up to 44 percent of the users.

Since July 2019, more than 1,000 pirate sites and illegal web domains had been taken down.

Video Coalition of Indonesia (VCI) also joined the fight by helping the Communication and IT Ministry identify and block the web domain and applications used for piracy.
