Indonesia: Swedish investors plan to invest in management waste sector of North Sumatra

The waste management in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, has attracted the attention of two companies from Sweden, the Swedish Energy Agency and Business Sweden.

A secretary of North Sumatra Provincial Government Sabrina on Wednesday said the two Sweden’s organizations have shown their eagerness to invest in the sector.

In fact, the cooperation between Indonesia and Sweden in the waste management field is not something new. According to Fuad Hasan, a consultant of Business Sweden, the Swedish firm has managed wastes in Sunter, North Jakarta.

Since the waste management in North Sumatra has big potential, the Swedish investors were interested in working together with the local government, said Hasan.

According to the North Sumatra Provincial Government’s secretary, the government is currently looking at Japan for its waste management and planning to adopt the style. The North Sumatra administration also has planned to establish a big disposal area in the province.

The sector of waste management is expected can generate energy and other essential products, such as fertilizers, she added.

Waste, especially plastic waste, has become a common issue in Indonesia. Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry reported there are 93 million plastic straws used by Indonesians every day. Every year, people in Indonesia can use plastic bags up to 9.8 billion and nearly 95 percent of them become waste.

One of Indonesia’s provinces that had success in managing wastes is Surabaya, East Java. As the second-largest city in Indonesia with a population of 3.3 million, Surabaya has built 352 trash banks across the city.

The government of Surabaya empowers local communities to handle the waste problem.

Five hundred environmental facilitators and 300 thousand environmental cadres are within the city to support and promote the recycling program.
