Indonesia's UN officially canceled due to COVID-19

The Chairman of the Commission X of the People’s Representative Assembly (DPR) overseeing education, Syaiful Huda, revealed that the 2020 National Examination (NE) will be canceled due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Indonesia. The substitution for the NE is being considered by the Indonesian government and DPR.

Revealed through his personal Instagram account on Tuesday, Syaiful said that the decision has been discussed by the Commission X together with the Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Makarim, through an online meeting. Syaiful then confirmed the news, adding that the decision was taken due to the estimation that the COVID-19 will plague Indonesia through April, the month when NE is being held.

Syaiful said that the government and DPR are seeking other options to replace the examination. One of the options is to hold the NE online, in order to avoid mass student gatherings. However, the minus is the online NE is only for the capable schools.

For the incapable schools, there are no other options but to pass the students according to their performances and report cards cumulatively. For Elementary School, it will be assessed through six years of study. For Junior and Senior high, it will be assessed through their three years of study.

Per Monday, the COVID-19 had infected 579 people. From the number, 49 people died, and 30 recovered.
