Indonesia Prepares Import Regulations for E-Commerce

Indonesia is preparing to draft import regulations for e-commerce platforms.

Despite the still relatively small number of e-commerce imported goods now but the trend will be growing rapidly soon, said Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution. Since the national products could be at risk of decreasing demand because of this, the government aims to create a ‘healthy business competition’ in the domestic market with the new regulations.

Met at his office on Wednesday (7/17), Darmin said that there are currently four types of import in Indonesia according to coordination meetings; First, large quantities import through importers. Second, imports in certain quantities from international e-commerce. Third, individual imports from foreign e-commerce. And lastly, ‘wholesale imports’.

At present, the Indonesian government is still preparing for the Draft Government Regulation (RPP). Although it has not reached the final stage, the government wants to ensure the e-commerce imports that occur have clear filters and mechanism.

In drafting the new regulations, Indonesia also conducted comparative studies with Southeast Asian neighboring countries like Malaysia and Thailand as well as Australia. This is intended so that the regulations made are not lax yet not overly strict compared to other countries.

The ministry has not been yet ascertaining the deadline for issuing the import regulations for e-commerce. But Darmin said he would make the discussion on this matter as one of the priorities in the ministry.
