Indonesia cooperates with the Netherlands to develop human resources in tourism

Indonesia and the Netherlands are going to work together in the tourism field through academic institutions from both countries. On July 4, The Tourism Polytechnic of Makassar – a capital province of South Sulawesi –tied a partnership with the Breda University of Applied Science from the Netherlands in developing the quality and competency of human capitals in Indonesia tourism, particularly in the academic sector including lecturers and students.

Both of the institutions have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Sunday in Makassar, according to Muhammad Arifin, the representative and acting Director of Makassar's Polytechnic who signed the MOU with Dr. Elisabeth Minnemann, President of the Executive Board of Breda University of Applied Science.

Cooperation is not the first time for the two institutions. A Joint Lecture between the Makassar’s Tourism Polytechnic with the Breda University of Applied Science was held in 2017 and was facilitated by Swisscontact – a non-profit institution. This new partnership was showing the campus interested in keeping on official cooperation with the Breda University of Applied Science, said Arifin.

Three lectures and 11 students of the Breda University of Applied Science are visiting the Makassar Polytechnic Campus right now, according to the campus’ spokesman.

The collaboration is hoped to actualize the Makassar Polytechnic’s aim to be “World Class Polytechnic" since the Breda University of Applied Science offers numerous of tourism-related study programs such as Tourism Management, Leisure & Event Management, and Hotel Management, Tourism Destination Management, Arifin appreciated.

He added that Makassar Polythenic and the Breda University of Applied Science agreed to advance of lecturers and students’ competencies and qualification at the master level of a tourism destination. Both of the institutions also consented to hold training in enhancing the tourism polytechnics’ role as a Study Center of Marine Tourism, rural and village tourism, international journal research, and publications.

Makassar Polythenic’s cooperation in academic is in line with the tourism ministry plans to boost the quality standards for resources in the national tourism sector.

Lately, the ministry holds a national coordination meeting with the theme “Wonderful Indonesia Digital Tourism (WIDI) Champion 4.0. Curriculum and Training”. Tourism’s lessons and academic content plans were arranged during the meeting,

Arif Yahya, Indonesia’s Tourism Minister, the new curriculum would stress on digital economy models for national tourism and the Ministry would establish community-based programs to improve human capitals in the sector.
