Indonesia can be a victim of the trade war, says Chinese scholars

Ruan Zongze, the Executive Vice President of the Chinese Institute of International Relations said Indonesia could be a victim of the trade war between Washington and Beijing.

During a news conference held on Monday, Zongze said Indonesia could suffer from the interference
because market share will likely to be restricted.

Since China and the U.S are the two greatest economies of the world, the trade conflict cause turbulence in the global supply chain. In normal circumstance, Indonesia and ASEAN export their goods to China, and China re-exports them to the U.S.

While Indonesia and Southeast Asian nations are trying to obtain benefit from the war, the Executive Vice President said it was only a short-term observation.

Zongze emphasized cooperations between Indonesia and the ASEAN countries are necessary in order to encounter the possibility of a shortening market share.

Previously during the 32nd Trade Expo Indonesia on June 12, in front of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI), Indonesia President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that they could possibly take advantages of the trade war since it could give positive impacts on Indonesia.

Indonesia could take the slot of Chinese goods that restricted by the U.S government to increase its business capacity, added the President.

Mr. Jokowi encouraged Kadin and HIPMI to keep looking for opportunities amid the trade tension between Trump and Xi administration.
