Import of Salt Industries, Beware the Potential for Excess Stock

Responding to the salt deficit, KKP proposes imports of 2.2 million tons. But a coordinated cross-ministerial meeting led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Darmin Nasution, decided on salt imports for the industry of 3.7 million tons. Member of the House of Representatives Commission IV Ono Surono considers that the decision to import 3.7 million tons of salt for industry is not in line with national accounts data. Import plans that do not refer to the salt balance also potentially violate Law no. 7/2016 on Protection and Empowerment of Fishermen, Power Fishers, and Pond Salak. Protection strategies, as set forth in Article 12 paragraph (2), among others, include controlling the import of salt commodities.

Previously, the CTF hoped that 3.7 million tons of imports would not seep into the consumption salt market and make the price of people's salt fall. KKKP detailing this year's salt demand of 3.9 million tons comes from the demand of CAP (Ahlal Alkali Plan) industry 1.8 million tons, 460,000 tons of food, 4,430 tons of pharmaceuticals, 538,752 tons of paper and pulp, 465,398 tons of fish salting, manufacturing) 362,613 tons, and 331,848 tons of households.
