IDI: 97 percent you will recover from COVID-19

Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) called for the Indonesian people to stay calm while facing the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Indonesia. When the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) announced the first two patients of COVID-19 on Monday (2/3), Indonesian people were breaking out in a cold sweat and immediately hoarded the supermarkets and traditional markets.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, the lung specialist doctor at Persahabatan Hospital, Erlina Burhan, asserted that COVID-19 is different from the infamous Avian Flu. While reaping a high death toll, COVID-19 only reaped a 3 percent death toll. The 97 percent percentage means total recovery for the infected!

Compared to the number, there are many diseases with less recovery percentage than COVID-19, said Erlina.

The World Health Organization (WHO) showed the percentage of death due to COVID-19 was 3.4 percent, while real-time data from John Hopkins University showed per Thursday that from over 95,700 cases, about 56 percent of which were tested negative.

Erlina then explained that COVID-19 actually shows mild clinical symptoms. It will be dangerous for people with weak immunity or the elderly with underlying causes.

While there has not been any antidote, vaccine, nor antivirus, a patient of COVID-19 could be cured with symptomatic and supportive therapy, reducing symptoms and enhancing immunity. Erlina herself said that COVID-19 is a “self-limiting disease” that could be battled by our own immune system. For those who have been tested negative for the COVID-19, they are free indeed.

However, Erlina still reminded that people should keep their eyes on the development of the COVID-19 and preserve a healthy lifestyle to prevent getting infected.
