Hyundai remains silent about its business scheme in Indonesia

Hyundai’s business scheme in Indonesia is expected to change after its principal company, Hyundai Motor Corporation (HMC) had invested a lucrative amount of Rp21.8 trillion in Indonesia in late November 2019 for 2019 – 2030. According to the deal, it is implemented into a new company, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI).

Besides HMMI, there is also a new subsidiary company from HMC in Indonesia, Hyundai Motors Indonesia. Speaking on Monday after arriving at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, President Director of HMI, Sung Jo Ha, said that HMI acts as HMC’s distributor in Indonesia.

However, HMC’s strategy in managing its business in Indonesia is unclear yet. Before HMMI and Hyundai Motors Indonesia were established, Hyundai’s operation in Indonesia was managed by two domestic investment companies: Hyundai Indonesia Motor (HIM) as the sole agent, and Hyundai Mobil Indonesia (HMI) as the distributor.

Sung Jo Ha remains clammed up regarding the Hyundai Motors Indonesia’s relation with the two preceding companies.

Deputy Marketing Director of HMI, Hendrik Wiradjaja, also did not give a specific answer regarding four operational Hyundai companies in Indonesia. Hendrik could only assure that HMI had obtained HMC’s permission.

Hendrik hinted that Hyundai’s business scheme in Indonesia will be unveiled with the other senior officials of the S. Korean automaker in separate press conferences.
