Hotel Shortage for Olympic, Tokyo Looks Offshore with Cruise Ships

Tokyo Olympic is coming soon next year, but Japan still have another obstacle besides the summer heatwave, namely the shortage of accommodation for fans to stay during the Games.

The issue has emerged as a major headache for both travel business and public, as the government aims to boost foreign visitors pouring into Japan's capital up to 40 million in 2020.

However, the Japanese officials are exploring a novel way to solve this issue by going offshore with cruise ships operating as floating hotels.

There is actually a ban on Japan’s hotel rooms without windows, but last year, the Japanese health ministry issued a regulation that allows windowless ship’s cabin to be used as hotels during major events like the Olympic. The officials also came up with the idea to temporarily dock off giant ships in Tokyo and Yokohama to accommodate visitors.

The new regulation is fresh air for private sectors to expand their chance to attract more customers. Among those on board with the idea is Japan’s biggest travel agency JTB. The company has catered the 1,011-cabin Sun Princess for the Olympic period, with jacuzzis and theaters come with the facility.

JTB will offer special packages for the rooms with Olympic games tickets but they are not cheap—priced between US$1,850 and US$6,700 for the different rooms-tickets package.

Despite the high prices, head of JTB's Tokyo 2020 Project Office Minoru Kuge said that the company is confident about the demand partly because of accommodation shortage in the certain standard itself and excellent reactions from its customers on the cruise ships idea.

Even though the floating hotels might become a solution for the accommodation issue, but Mizuho Research Institute warns that few ships would not be enough since the number of tourists remains unclear.
