Hiroyuki: Personal Opinion on Cricket Eating:
Cricket food has been attracting attention worldwide as a
countermeasure against food shortages, and in Japan, crickets are being
powdered and used in food products. A prefectural high school in Komatsushima
City, Tokushima Prefecture, held a cooking class using powdered edible
crickets, which are rich in nutrients and can be produced efficiently, and
those who wanted to try them tasted them. Some Internet users criticized the
practice, saying, "Don't feed children ghettos," and "Many more
children may become traumatized and become bitter about eating insects,"
prompting a flood of complaints to the high school and a groundswell of support
and disapproval on the Internet.
Hiroyuki then posted an
English-language document from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the
U.S. that stated, "Insects are a valuable alternative protein source, but
their high purine derivative content is not recommended for people with certain
diseases," and added, "Cricket diets are high in purines because the
entire outer shell is eaten, and people with gout and crustacean allergies are
at risk. Cricket diets are not recommended for people with high uric acid
levels because of the risk of gout and crustacean allergies. Cricket eaters
hide this fact from the public.
