Cannes Film Festival 2019 was held on Tuesday, May 14, 2019. Just like years before, many famous actors and actress attended the film festival. This year’s highlights would be the premiere of Jim Jarmusch’s zombie movie “The Dead Don’t Die” during the premiere, Alejandro Iñárritu’s speech, and a tribute to the late Agnes Varda.

Cannes Film Festival 2019 kicked off with the premiere of the zombie movie “The Dead Don’t Die” as the opening. George Romero’s tale is the one that inspired the movie. The movie itself is filled with famous actors such as Bill Murray, Adam Driver, and Tilda Swinton.

Another highlight of the night is the tribute to Agnes Varda. There was an empty chair with sign “Agnes V.” on the back during the opening. It is actually a tribute to the French New Wave pioneer, who died back in March 2019. Not only using chair as the tribute, but there was also a performance by Angele, a Belgian singer who sang “Without You”. The song is from Varda’s famous film “Cleo From 5 to 7” which was released in 1962.

Lastly, there was Iñárritu, a Mexican-born film maker, as one of the juries of the night. He was the first ever Latin American to preside over the jury of Cannes. During the opening, he also criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans for a Mexican border wall.
