Heavy snow forecast for Tokyo area and northeastern Japan on Friday
Japanese weather officials are warning of heavy snow in Tokyo and the surrounding areas, as well as in the northeastern region of Tohoku, on Friday. Snow could accumulate even in central Tokyo and affect traffic.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says a developing low-pressure system is expected to move east along the southern coast of the country's main island of Honshu.
The system is expected to bring heavy snow to the Kanto-Koshin region, which includes Tokyo, through the early hours of Saturday, and the Pacific side of Tohoku from Friday morning through early Saturday morning.
Weather officials say snowfall could reach dangerous levels and they may issue heavy snow warnings.
Expected snowfall during the 24-hour period through Saturday morning is up to 40 centimeters in northern Kanto and Koshin; 30 centimeters on the Pacific coast of Tohoku; 20 centimeters in Hakone, Tama and Chichibu; 15 centimeters in Shizuoka Prefecture; 10 centimeters in the plain areas of southern Kanto and 5 centimeters in central Tokyo.
The transport ministry and the Meteorological Agency say the snow could cause traffic disruptions. They are asking people to stay up to date on the latest weather and traffic information, work from home and avoid non-essential outings.
They also warn of icy roads and potential snow-related blackouts.
