Heavy rain warnings issued for southwestern Japan as tropical cyclone approaches

TOKYO - The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued heavy rain warnings and advisories for the Okinawa and Amami islands in southwestern Japan from the evening of June 26 through the following morning as a tropical depression which is developing into a typhoon and a rain front approach.
The agency said thunderstorms with extremely heavy rain are also expected on the Pacific Ocean side of parts of western Japan. It is calling on people in affected areas to be on their guard against landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, swollen rivers and rough seas.

The agency said a low-pressure system east of the Philippines was heading east-northeast at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour and packing winds of up to 23 meters per second (about 83 kilometers per hour).

Over the 24-hour period up until 6 a.m. on June 27, up to 250 millimeters of rain is expected in the southern areas of Kyushu in southwestern Japan, the agency said. It predicted rainfall of up to 180 millimeters over the same period in the Okinawa region and 150 millimeters in the Amami region and in the Shikoku region in western Japan.

Extremely heavy rain is expected to continue after this, with between 200 and 300 millimeters falling in the Shikoku region over the 24-hour period through 6 a.m. on June 28, 100 to 200 millimeters in southern Kyushu, and 50 to 100 millimeters in the Amami region.
