Heavy rain expected for much of Japan through Saturday
Meteorologists in Japan are warning of the risk of landslides or other disasters due to heavy rain in areas along the Sea of Japan coast through Saturday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts downpours from western to northern Japan as a front becomes active.
Rainfall during the 24-hour period through Saturday morning is expected to reach up to 250 millimeters in northern Kyushu, 200 millimeters in southern Kyushu, Shikoku and Kinki, and 180 millimeters in Hokuriku.
Agency officials are warning of landslides, flooding and swollen rivers, as well as tornadoes.
Officials are also urging people to use hazard maps to check disaster risks in the areas where they are.
