Heavy localized rain in northern and western Japan, flooding and swelling, watch for landslides.

Due to cold air in the upper atmosphere, atmospheric conditions have become unstable over a wide area from northern Japan to western Japan, and locally heavy rain is falling.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is calling for caution against flooding in low-lying areas, swollen rivers, and landslides, as rain clouds are expected to develop mainly in the Kanto Koshin and Tohoku regions later this evening.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the rainy season front is extending near southern Kyushu, and strong cold air is flowing into the sky over eastern and northern Japan, causing unstable atmospheric conditions over a wide area from northern to western Japan.

In the hour up to 2:20 p.m., 35.5 millimeters of heavy rain fell in Utsunomiya City, and localized rain clouds are also developing in Tohoku.

Due to the rainfall so far, some areas in Iwate, Yamagata, and Fukushima prefectures have been placed under a landslide watch.

Cumulonimbus clouds are likely to develop mainly in the Kanto Koshin and Tohoku regions where moist air will flow in late at night, and there is a possibility of heavy rainfall of 30 millimeters or more per hour.

The amount of rainfall for the next 24 hours is expected to be 100 millimeters in the Tohoku region and 80 millimeters in the Kanto Koshin region by noon on the 17th.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has called for caution against flooding in low-lying areas, sudden rise and overflow of rivers, and landslides, as well as lightning, gusty winds, and hail.
