Having lost Rp15 billion in flood, malls demand compensation from the government

The Association of Indonesian Department Store Retailers (HPPBI) demanded compensation from the Jakarta Government due to the flood that halted malls’ operation since the beginning of 2020.

Speaking on Saturday, the head of HPPBI, Budihardjo Iduansjah, stated that HPPBI had submitted a letter to the Jakarta Government to discuss the compensation for the loss due to force majeure.

Budhardjo said that all the retailers want a “fair and square” compensation. He mentioned that so far, the demand is only limited to the amendment of some provisions such as tax. From a rough estimation, Budihardjo said that the loss due to the closing has amounted to Rp 15 billion.

To ensure the safety of its customers and visitors, some malls in Jakarta had to close due to the flood at the beginning of January 2020. One of these malls was Taman Anggrek Mall, closed due to its generators damaged by the flood.

To prevent the water from entering the building, especially the ground floor where its generators lie, Taman Anggrek Mall embanked its establishment by sacks filled with sands and tarp.

Moreover, Budihardjo also mentioned that according to data obtained by the HPPBI, Cipinang Mall and Lippo Puri Mall also had to close down earlier for more than a week due to the flood.
