Happy 86th Birthday, Emperor Emeritus Akihito!

On Monday, the Emperor Emeritus Akihito celebrated his 86th birthday. It was his first birthday celebrated since he stepped down from the Chrysanthemum Throne in April 2019 to be succeeded by his eldest son and the current Emperor of Japan, Emperor Naruhito.

Emperor Emeritus Akihito became the first Japanese monarch to abdicate the throne in 200 years. The abdication of Emperor Emeritus Akihito marked the set of Heisei Era and the rise of the Reiwa era.

While the Emperor Emeritus still resides in the Imperial Palace, he has largely withdrawn from public attention. Emperor Emeritus Akihito’s birthday will not be celebrated as a national holiday as it was when he was the Emperor.

Last year, the former Emperor of Japan received 82,850 well-wishers into the Imperial Palace to wish him birthday.

Despite being diagnosed with cerebral anemia in July 2019, the Imperial Household Agency said that the Emperor Emeritus is doing well, walking around the palace every morning with his Empress Emerita Michiko.

Channeling his hobby in music, the Emperor Emeritus Akihito often plays cello accompanied by the Empress Emerita playing the piano. Not only music but also the Emperor Emeritus frequently does biological research about the goby fish and is ready to compile new academic papers about it.

Living his ordinary life as the former emperor, Emperor Emeritus Akihito has often visited art exhibitions and musical concerts. In November, he was seen attending the third-place match for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Enthroned in 1989, the Emperor Emeritus Akihito was the first monarch enthroned under the post-war, pacifist Japanese Constitution, which means Akihito acted as the “symbol of Japan” but had no political power. He succeeded his father, Emperor Hirohito, marking the end of Showa Era.

In 2016, the Emperor Emeritus Akihito already stated his concern that he might not be able to continue bearing the responsibility as the Emperor due to his old age. In 2017, Japan’s parliament enacted a one-off legislation to keep him running.

In total, Emperor Emeritus Akihito and his Empress Emerita had visited 36 countries during his reign. As a matter of fact, the former Emperor was the first Japanese Emperor to visit China.

During his reign, the royal couple worked hard to console the victims of natural disasters, especially the northeastern tsunami and Fukushima meltdown in 2011 and commemorate those who perished in the WWII era in Saipan (2005), Palau (2015), and the Philippines (2016) regardless of their nationality.
