Happy 125th Birthday, London Bridge!

The historical London’s Tower Bridge is celebrating its 125th anniversary today. This bridge has been the icon of British capital since the reign of Queen Victoria that was built by his son, the future king Edward VII and queen Alexandra on June 30, 1894. Thousands of people have passed through to get to work, boats have passed through to continue their journey, and millions of tourists have taken zillions of pictures of them in this world’s famous landmark.

The construction of this iconic bridge was also just as marvelous as it is. The effort involved hundreds of workers whom literally had to risked their life with the minimum safety standard at that time. The divers had to work nine-hour shifts in dangerous conditions to dig out nearly six meters of gravel to plant the foundations of the bridge. Eventually, the bridge took eight years to be completed.

For the anniversary weekend, a few of the various designs are being recreated to be displayed on the bridge for passing pedestrians and tourists. Actors in Victorian costumes will entertain the people by roleplaying the social life on Victorian era, portraying the employees and engineers of the time. Twelve concerts has been planned to take place in the counterweight chambers inside the tower legs.
