Half of the Tokyo Olympics should be held, yet one company opposes
In a questionnaire survey of the Asahi Shimbun, which targeted 100 major companies nationwide, we asked about the current state and future of the economy, as well as the various impacts and responses of the corona disaster.
The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics have been postponed to next summer due to the corona disaster. When asked about their thoughts on the event, 12 companies said that it should be held on a scale close to that before the Corona disaster, and 37 companies said that it should be held on a smaller scale. Only one company should not hold it. There seems to be a strong desire in the business world to hold a big event.
The companies that chose "should be held on a scale close to that before the corona storm" commented, "I hope it will be a positive factor for the activation of economic activity" (manufacturing industry). Many companies that chose "reduce the scale of the event" are demanding thorough infection prevention measures such as reducing the number of seats in the audience. Masahiko Mori, president of DMG Mori Seiki, said, "Only safe competitions should be held, and only the countries and athletes who want to participate should participate."
It was NYK that said it should not be held. The reason is "because the infection situation is unclear next summer."
"Others" reached 48 companies. Mizuno President Akito Mizuno said, "You can always decide to cancel. It is important to think desperately and make an effort to realize it." Satoru Yamamoto, president of Sumitomo Rubber Industries, said, "Sports have the wonder of giving courage, excitement, smiles, and dreams.
Mr. Kimio Handa, Managing Director of Shimizu Corporation, said, "I want you to devise ways to hold the event, such as preventing many people from gathering in one place." There were also voices hoping to become a "new role model for future global events" (President Katsuyuki Ota of ENEOS HD) after taking sufficient corona measures.
I also noticed some companies that could not determine the infection situation in the future. Kengo Sakurada, president of SOMPOHD, said, "It is difficult to make a decision at this point. It is appropriate to make a final decision on the scale and form by next spring when many competitions will be selected."
