Govt. plans to support local travel initiatives

The Japanese government is considering financial support for local travel campaigns in prefectures where the coronavirus is relatively under control.

The central government's "Go To Travel" initiative, which provides travelers with various discounts, has been halted nationwide since the end of last year in a bid to stem infections.

But prefectures with lower infection rates have launched campaigns to help their local tourism industries. They are encouraging people to travel within their home prefecture.

The national government now plans to support such campaigns.

It is considering a subsidy of up to 7,000 yen, or about 64 dollars for each traveler per night. That would go to spending on accommodation, dining or shopping.
