Google Blocked average 18 million scam emails daily related to COVID-19

On their Google cloud blog posted on Thursday, the company mentioned that they blocked malicious COVID-19 related emails that are sent to Gmail users 18 million daily in the past week alone. Besides the malicious malware and phishing emails, Google also blocked spam messages related to COVID-19 more than 240 million.

In the middle of the bizarre situation about the outbreak of coronavirus, Hackers are trying to exploit Gmail users in many ways like take advantage by impersonating government-related authorities including public-health authorities such as like WHO [World Health Organzation] and imitating government agencies to take advantage of businesses awaiting money from the stimulus bill or trying to abide by stay-at-home orders. During the pandemic, phishing and scams attempts have been raising as hackers trying to exploit people fears about the current situation.

By this year only, Americans have lost around $12 million to scammers and actors capitalizing on the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to avoid such a thing, Google recommends it's user to complete the Security Checkup, then to avoid download any unrecognized files and utilize Gmail's document preview as well as double-check the landing page if it has.

Google also encourages the user to report spam or malware emails should they received any as it will help the email service to block a similar content email in the future
