Good News! Huawei Comes Back to the U.S., But...

Finally, a certainty for the Chinese tech giant came knocking at its door. On Wednesday (10/7), the U.S. Department of Commerce stated that Huawei could come back trading with other companies in the U.S. Reportedly by Wall Street Journal, Huawei now can continue trading with American other tech giants as long as the sales are not putting the U.S. national security at risk.

This is the fruit bore from the negotiation between the U.S. and China on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, last month. President of the United States, Donald Trump, once vowed to President of China, Xi Jinping, that his country would scrutinize the policy of allowing Huawei to come back in business with other tech companies on American soil.

However, the Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, stated on Tuesday (9/7) that while Huawei could stay in business in the U.S., its status remains on the “Entity List”. In other words, Huawei is still blacklisted.

In order for all tech companies to trade or to hold a business talk with Huawei, they need to apply for a license from the Department of Commerce by demonstrating how the business with Huawei will not put the U.S. at risk. Moreover, by applying the “presumption of denial” policy in the process of granting permission to hold business with Huawei, the permission will be likely more difficult to come out.

Due to being blacklisted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, some major chipset and tech companies like Intel, Qualcomm, and even Google had to severe their business relations with Huawei, a US$30 million blow for the Chinese tech giant. Moreover, the CEO and founder of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei, stated that from US$70 million which Huawei rolled out in 2018, US$11 million of which went to American tech companies like Intel, Qualcomm, and Micron.
