GoJek to challenge Netflix with GoPlay

Indonesian-flagged ride-hailing service and payment service, GoJek, trod its feet onto the video streaming sector by launching its most recent service, GoPlay.

The Chief Executive of GoJek Entertainment Group, Edy Sulistyo, said that the ‘Netflix’ ala GoJek was launched to provide Indonesian people with a high-quality streaming service in Indonesia where the only way to enjoy such content is by going to the cinema.

Besides, Sulistyo pointed out that the launching of GoPlay was to develop the Indonesian film industry and to connect with millions of Indonesian netizens.

Up until now, GoPlay has been downloaded more than 10,000 times. By GoPlay, GoJek has officially entered the video streaming service in the ASEAN region consisting of the U.S streaming giant Netflix, Malaysian with Iflix, and Singaporean with HOOQ.

With a monthly subscription fee at Rp89,000 (US$6) per month, Sulistyo showed certainty that the service might work, noting the fact that mobile penetration in Indonesia had reached more than 50%. How is it going to compete with Netflix? Sulistyo was confident that the quality of Indonesian shows that GoPlay offered would be totally different from what Netflix had.

GoJek, partnering with Visinema – a film production company - and VICE Indonesia, had secured rights to hundreds of Indonesian film and series which might be showcased in the GoPlay. GoJek also got the rights to display “Memories of My Body”, Indonesian nominee for 2019 Academy Awards.

When being asked about the budget for GoPlay, Sulistyo declined to give any numbers. But, he revealed that GoPlay would collaborate with more production houses, both domestic and international, to deliver more content which will be recalibrated as the number of users increases.

It was hinted that GoPlay was aiming for a collaboration with South Korean production houses such as CJ E&M and SM Entertainment.

It has been nine years for GoJek. Starting from a ride-hailing app in 2010, GoJek had stretched its arms to various sectors from food and goods delivery to payment service with GoPay.
