GoJek CEO resigns to take ministerial mandate

Fulfilling the summon to the State Palace on Monday, the CEO of PT Aplikasi Anak Bangsa (GoJek), Nadiem Makarim (35), stated that he is ready to receive the ministerial duty for Working Cabinet: Second Edition, formed by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, or generally known as Jokowi.

To show his eagerness, Nadiem said that he had resigned from his post in the ride-hailing service, Indonesian-owned decacorn. He asserted that he no longer has the authority nor position in GoJek.

The former CEO said that it was an honor to be working alongside the President as a minister.

In the press conference, Nadiem did not give any clue about what minister he will be appointed as. He only revealed that while discussing with President Jokowi, they are discussing the visions and missions of the upcoming Working Cabinet: the reformation of bureaucracy, investment, and improving human resources in Indonesia.

THE NEW CEO FOR GOJEK

As Nadiem Makarim accepted Jokowi’s offer as the new minister in the cabinet, one question remains: Who will be the next GoJek’s CEO?

GoJek replies that question in faster than expected. As GoJek had anticipated Nadiem’s resignation to fulfill the august ministerial mission, the ride-hailing company picked Andre Sulistyo as CEO and Kevin Aluwi as the co-CEO as revealed by GoJek’s Chief Corporate Affairs, Nila Marita.

Since 2016, Andre Sulistyo had been the President of GoJek, while Kevin Aluwi was the co-founder of GoJek with Nadiem. From 2014 to 2016, Kevin sat as GoJek’s Chief Financial Officer. Currently, Kevin is GoJek’s, Chief Information Officer.

In other words, both Andre and Kevin have seats in GoJek’s Board of Directors.

GOJEK DRIVERS: NADIEM MAKARIM AS MINISTER? NONSENSE

While Indonesian people seemed to agree that professionals should fill the ministerial seats, the drivers of GoJek disagreed.

Leader of the Two-Wheels Action Movement (GARDA), Igun Wicaksono, stated that Nadiem Makarim is unfit to be the minister for two reasons.

Igun said that Nadiem cannot keep his own word: realizing welfare for GoJek drivers. He pointed out that while GoJek is thriving, its partners cannot feel the same. Therefore, Igun called for Jokowi to not see GoJek from its decacorn side but the welfare of its employees.

The second reason is that despite resigning from his position as CEO, Nadiem can still enjoy GoJek’s profit since he is the owner.
