Gas poisoning kills 4 people in Semarang

SEMARANG - Work safety needs to be reinforced once more. On Monday (29/7), when working on a barge, four persons died. Allegedly, they died due to gas poisoning when they were fixing the barge located at Tanjung Emas docking port, Semarang. The four deceased workers were registered as workers from PT Kodja Bahari.

Their bodies were found in the ship hatch at 02:55 a.m. local time. The four casualties are identified as Mardjono (61) from Bekasi City, West Java, Lamani (32), Muhammad Nur Huda (22), and Jadi (33) from Pentur Village, Boyolali Regency, Central Java, Indonesia.

The victims were fixing “Zulkifli 2” barge’s hatch since Sunday (28/7) afternoon. However, until the night came, none heard back from the four. Usually, all the workers come back at 09.00 p.m. from their works.

The foreman then assigned other workers to groups to start looking for the four. On the entrance of the hatch, they only found tools and equipment belong to the four. The search went through all the place until a worker found the four already lying soulless in the hatch. The hatch lies 5-meter deep in the barge.

Even when they were searching the hatch, they needed to equip themselves with a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to prevent inhaling the hazardous gas.

It took approximately 2 hours to evacuate the bodies from the hazardous hatch. The operation involved National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) and join the SAR team which consisted of Water Police (Polair), Indonesian Sea and Coast Guard (KPLP), and Kariadi Hospital. Having been evacuated, the four bodies were brought to Kariadi Hospital for autopsy.
